"Pieter Monfort was the son of a Walloon Huguenot family. They were French-speaking Belgians. Pieter's parents, Jean Jan and Jacqueline Moreau Monfort were from Valenciennes where their son Pieter was born. Valenciennes was then in the province of Hainault but is today in the French Department du Nord. The Protestant Monfort family had fled to Holland to escape religious persecution. ^[8] In early 1624 Jean and Jacqueline Monfort had sailed on the "Eendracht" with the very first settlers to go to America to establish the Dutch settlement of New Netherland. The Rapaljes, Joris and Catalyntje, were also in that group. The Monforts later returned to Holland where their son Pieter Monfort was married at the Walloon Church in Amsterdam to Sara de Plancken. Pieter and his father were lace weavers in Amsterdam. In 1639 Pieter and Sara sailed for America. Pieter's parents, Jean and Jacqueline Monfort, accompanied them and thus, they came to New Netherland for the second time. In May of 1641, Pieter acquired title to land at the Wallabout on Long Island in present Brooklyn, and he subsequently acquired title to more land. Pieter and an Italian named Cicero Alberto farmed at the Wallabout under an agreement between them. Pieter Monfort was a member and Deacon of the Dutch Reformed Church at Brueckelen (Brooklyn), established in 1660. He was a well-to-do man as indicated by his being one of the highest taxpayers at the Wallabout. He was a magistrate in Brooklyn in 1658. (Source-"Leaves From a Tree" by Jack T. Hutchinson.) ... May 29, 1641, a patent was granted to Jan Monfoort for land on Long Island next to Rinnegakonc and adjoining the premises of Pieter Monfoort, for which he also obtained, on 17 Aug 1643 another patent, in which the pre mises are more particularly described, and said to contain 28 morgen; and May 1, 1647, a patent was granted for an additional 190 rods. In addition to lands on Long Island, Jan Monfoort obtained, Mar 16, 1647, a patent for a lot on Manhatten Island, on the north-east side of the Graft; and Pieter Monfoort obtained on the same date a patent for a lot on said Island on the north- east side of the Graft. June 28, 1654, th ey both obtained patents for lots on the Sheeps pasture on said Island. ... Jan Monfoort married Geertie Pieterse Luyster, and in 1677 he and his wife were members of the reformed Dutch Church of Brooklyn. - Register of Ancestors. It is more likely, as other genealogies state, that he was born in Valenciennes, now in Nord, France, at that time under Spanish rule. His christening at "St. Antonis" on 20 Jan. 1616 was likely at Saint Anthony's (St. Antoine) church, just outside Valenciennes, in France.
