Biography

Ferdenandus Van Sycklin, the progenitor of the Van Sicklen or Van Sickle family in America, was born in the Netherlands in Europe, probably in the province of Holland, about the year 1635. He emigrated to America in 1652. Like the great mass of the original emigrants to America, he probably belonged to a humble class in society, and came to this country when but a lad (about seventeen years of age) to better his condition in life. For a boy of that age to leave his parents and the land of his nativity, and come to the wild woods of America at that early day required a great deal of courage and stamina; yet this same courage and energy has characterized most of his descendants to the present time. (If boys of the present day should go to a new country, their minds would be so filled with ideas of pirace, and all sorts of trash derived from "Dime Novels," that they could not make an honest living and would be glad to send word to eh "old folks" to furnish money for cigars and tobacco).
Of his European ancestry nothing is known, "which is the case with most of early emigrants to New Netherland; intercourse with the relations in the fatherland having long ago ceased, and having, no doubt, been obstructed in consequence of the piratical conquest of the colony by the English in 1654, during a time of peace" [1]

...was an indentured servant to Gijsbert C Ouderkerk in Orange Co. for 4 years; this is how he came to America [1]

Was the first to inhabit New Netherland [1]

Was a Lt. in Gravesend, NY (Long Island) militia [1]

...He took the oath of allegiance in Flatlands in 1687, and is entered as 35 years in this country; consequently he emigrated in 1652. He (Ferdinandus, the I.)first settled in Flatlands, (in Kings County, Long Island); but in his latter days he removed to Gravesend, where he died about the year 1712. [1]

Steven, Michael, Bill et al. I noticed there are three Margrietje (Van Sycklin) Terhunes. Van Sycklin-16, Van Sycklyn-1, and Van Sycklin-61. I think there's an extra set of parents, also. I'm leaving it in your capable hands to decide LNAB and merge everybody. Have a good day. AnneB

Vansicklen-2 and Van Sichelen-1 appear to represent the same person because: they were in an unmerged match & the New Netherland Settlers Approval System (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:New_Netherland_Settlers_-_Approval_System) now has them marked "Green" (NNS Category) and "Orange" (Merge Pending), indicating that the two are ready to be merged. This Vansicklen-2 was imported several months ago as son of mother Margrietje Pieterse Coeymans, but that seems to be in conflict with other imports, and the relationships appear to be completely improbable.

So I am going to detach that mother, so that this Ferdinandus can be properly merged.
