Biography

Jan was born in 1635. He passed away about 1678.

Was a member of the Dutch Militia and fought with Stuyvesant in the Indian wars

1668 "Van Amersfoort had a violent temper. As a result, he spent much time in court and jail. In 1668, he was exiled from the colony for physically and verbally abusing his wife and mother-in-law. Although no direct explanation has been found, it is believed that this is the reason that all of his children used the 'Van Steenbergh' surname." (Why the name Van Steenbergh was chosen is not known)[1]

Jan Jansen sold the Wyldwyck estate to his wife's siblings "seven months prior to his exile"[2]

"Jan disappeared, fueling speculation that he may have been 'encouraged against his will' to disappear"[3]

Jan Jansen van Amersfoort, son of Jan Dircksen van Amersfoort, came to New Netherlandt either in 1638 (@ age 2 or 3) with his father, or in 1642 when his father made a trip to Holland and back to New Netherlandt. It is speculated that Jan Dircksen may have come alone in 1638 and made the 1642 trip to fetch his family. Jan Jansen v A's contract as New Amsterdam City Carpenter (15 May, 1657) indicated that he was a "Bachelor and Freeman", meaning that he was unmarried, over 21, and not indentured. In 1658, he accepted the job to erect a stockade at Kingston, and later became the City Carpenter for Kingston. He married Catryn Mathyssen, d.o. Mathijs Jansen van Ceulen and Margriet Hendrickse, in Kingston, 3 Oct, 1660, and they baptised their first child 8 weeks later. Jan was exiled from the colony for abusing his wife and mother-in-law. On one occasion, Jan had beaten Katryn so badly that she was thought dead, and taken to her mother's house for last rites. She was 8 months pregnant at the time, and luckily she and child survived the beating. Jan was a heavy drinker and a "hothead"; he appeared as a defendant in court in more than 70 occasions between 1660 and 1678. He disappeared in 1678, and it assumed that he either died at that time, or left the area never to return. Birth: 1630 in Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands Death: of after his exile AFT 1678 [4]

Vanamersfoort-14 and Jansen-21 appear to represent the same person because: Names are similar (van Amesfoort vs Vanamersfoort and van Steenbergen vs Vansteenberghen) and birth date of son Mattys/Mateys is the same.

Vanamersfoort-14 has a different birth date but no sources, and the death date is the same.

Van Steenbergen-62 and Jansen-21 are not ready to be merged because: Setting to a match, a g2g thread will be started shortly.

Van Steenbergen-35 and Jansen-21 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the patronymic NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks!

Van Amersfoort-1 and Jansen-21 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the patronymic NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. The only data at risk here to keep is the marriage in Kingston, Ulster County, NY. Thanks!
