Biography

Arthur was born in 1891. He was the son of Arthur van Straubenzee and Mary Rosher. In 1919, Arthur Van Straubenzee married Margaret Joan Radcliffe of Bag Park Widecombe, England, and together they had had two children: William Radcliffe and Vivian Isabel Ruth.[1]

Arthur joined the Army being the 8th Generation of the Van Straubenzee family to serve with the Armed Forces.[1] He went to school at United Services College, 1903-1906, an English private boys' public boarding school for the sons of military officers in North Devon, England.[2] He was a graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada in 1911.[3] At the outbreak of the Great War, he was serving with the Royal Field Artillery[1], including the Royal Horse Artillery.[3] During the war, he was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous bravery" in 1916 whilst serving upon the Western Front and by the end of the war he had achieved the rank of Major.[1]

Arthur served with the Indian Army after war. As Major, he was part of the force in Persia (Iran) fighting the Bolsheviks with Reza Khan, circa 1921.[3] During the Second World War he was Commander of the Royal Artillery of the 5th Indian Division with the rank of Brigadier, and was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order.[1]

He passed away in 1967[4]
