Cornelius Jansen Van Texel or van Tassel[1] was born about 1585-1600 in Schoonderwoert, near Leerdam, South Holland.[2] Earlier, his family may have originated from the Island of Texel (The Texel), southwest of the Frisian Islands.[3]
He was the first Van Tassel (van Texel) immigrant to America.[citation needed]
The specific year of his emigration is not known, but his son was born at Fort Amsterdam in 1625. (Others suggest Jan was born about 1621; see his profile.) He likely arrived on one of the Dutch Vessels that commenced trading with the Indians after Hendrick (Henry) Hudson, in 1609 sailed up the river that bears his name.
He married (or otherwise had a child by) a Native American on Long Island (Great Neck) ~1624.[4]
No marriage record has been found. The union is based on a claim by his son Jan, that Jan had a Christian father and a Native mother.
An earlier theory that Wyandance, Sachem of the Montauk an Indian Tribe on Long Island , gave him his daughter Catoneras in marriage has been debunked. While Catoneras may have been related to Wyandance, she herself was a sachem, and was in the same generation as Wyandance.[5]
Strong (2010) suggests that Cornelius also married a Dutch woman named Geertje Teunis:
"but the date of the marriage is not known. In 1662 there is a record of a dispute involving Geertje and another woman over money for a gown.[10] Cornelis, who would have been over sixty, may have been married to her for some time. There is also a reference in 1655 to Jan Cornelissen’s brother, but it could have been a half-brother, or perhaps Geertje’s son. He appears to have been a younger brother because Jan was acting as his protector, accusing a man named Anthony Jansen Van Vaes of withholding his brother’s wages. The brother had worked for Van Vaes for three years.[11]"[6]
He died in 1684 in Long Island, New Amsterdam (now New York).[citation needed]
