Biography

Louisa Van Velsor Whitman, mother of nine children, eight of whom lived to adulthood, is best known, of course, for her birthing of her second child, Walt, born when Louisa was twenty-four years old.

Wife of Walter Whitman and mother to:

  • Jesse Whitman (1818) (died in lunatic asylum),
  • Walter Whitman Jr. (1819),
  • Mary Elizabeth Whitman [Van Nostrand] (1822),
  • Hannah Louise Whitman [Hyde] (1823),
  • unnamed boy (1825)(died at 6 months),
  • Andrew Jackson Whitman (1827),
  • Col. George Washington Whitman (1829),
  • Thomas Jefferson Whitman (1833), and
  • Edward Whitman (1835) (who was mentally and physically challenged).

Son Walter became a distinguished poet/essayist, son George was a Civil war Colonel who was wounded in action at the battle of Fredericksburg.

Her husband died in 1855. She then moved to Camden, New Jersey possibly to live with her son. She died by 1877.
