Sallie Ann Van Winkle, daughter of James W. and Elizabeth Jane (Davis) Van Winkle, was born in Clover Bottom, Kentucky, in 1855. She married Allen Hart, and they had one son, Ellis Hart.
Sallie Ann's second husband was William Henry Bicknell (called Henry), son of Hiram and Mournen (Kelly) Bicknell of Estill County, Kentucky. They had two daughters, Ruth (1896) and Helen (1900). Henry was a farmer and Sallie Ann was a school teacher in the Madison County Schools.
The Bicknells were always interested in helping underprivileged children. They opened their home to several homeless children, teaching them "to work, go to school, and become useful citizens."
William Henry died in 1935 at the age of ninety, and Sallie Ann died in 1951. They were buried in Berea, Kentucky.
(Sallie Ann Bicknell was my father, John Chrisman's, 2nd cousin. --Martha Riley)
