Jasper Willius Vanatta was born in Alexandria, Tennessee[1] on the 19th of August, 1890[1] to Jordan Vanatta and [1] and Elza Syntha Warford
He would become a farmer[1] and marry Amanda Elizabeth Estes in 1918 and they would have:
On the 23rd of July, 1918 he would enter service under ARmy Serial number 3998201 at Smithville, Tennessee[1] and be part of the Depot Brigade, 27th Company, 157th Regiment. He entered as a private and would be promoted to a Sgt. He would train in Atlanta, Georgia and be in Camp Gordon and Camp Merritt. He would sail on the 18th of September, 1918
He died of a disease at sea while on service on the 30th of September, 1918. Included in his military file was a copy of the telegram sent to the family[1]:
Hoboken, N.J. Oct 15, 1918 Mrs. Bessie Vanatta, Smithville Tenn. Regret to advise that Private William Vanatta died on seas Sep. 30. 1918 of pnu- monia. Please telegraph Cpt. John A. Nelson, Pier 3. Hoboken N.J. whether or not you want remains shipped to you, or if you desire interment here. Expenses of shipping body or interment at this place(Sic. Crossed out) port will be borne by the Government Wire your answer. W.B. Judson, Brig, Gen.
He would be buried in Alexandria, Tennessee[1] on the 27th of October, 1918[1] in the Vanatta Cemetery [2]
