John Ennis Vance was born in 1815 in Connorville Indian, the son of James Vance and Margaret Ennis Vance. He married Elizabeth Bowman, daughter of Cosby Bowman in McDonough County Illinois in 1840, they had four children, Margaret Ann, Edward "Eddy", Nancy Parillia and Emily Franics. Elizabeth died in 1850 and is buried in Wapello, Iowa. In about 1856 John married Susannah Fall, one child John Fremont. John owned several large properties in Burlington Iowa, raised hogs and had an interest in a ferry over the Des Moines River. He divorced Susan about 1859 and wen to Colorado where he purchased a large ranch in partnership with John Evans. In his retirement he lived in Denver and had a pet sheep that followed him around. Vance Mountain in Colorado is named after him.
