Biography

Mary was born in 1856. She was born in Harrison, Missouri. [1]

In 1860 she was 3 and living with parents, Henry and Elizabeth J, and brother in Missouri. [2]

In 1870 she was 14 and living with parents and three siblings in Missouri. [3]

She married James Rookstool in 1876.

In 1880 she was 23 and she and her husband are living in Missouri with 1 year old son Edward F Rookstool. [4]

Their son Henry was born in 1882. [5]

Their daughter Marie was born in 1891. [6]

In 1895 Mary and James were living in Iowa with 8 children. [7]

In 1900 she was 43 and they are living in Missouri with ten children. The census said she was mother to twelve children. [8]

Son Henry married in 1904. [9]

Daughter Clara married in 1907. [10]

Their son Edward Franklin married in 1909. [11]

In 1910 she was listed as 53 years old and living with son Christopher and four of her other sons (Freeman, Glen, Leroy and Albert) in Missouri. [12]

Their son Raleigh married in 1913. [13]

Son John married in 1917. [14]

In 1920 she was mistakenly listed as 44. She is living in her son Roy's household along with two other sons (Albert and James). [15]

Their daughter Bertha Bell married in 1927. [16]

Their son Ray married in 1928. [17]

In 1930 she was 74, a widow, and living with son Henry and his family in Nebraska City, Otoe, Nebraska. [18]

In 1940 she was 83 and still living with her son Henry and his wife in Missouri. [19]

Mary passed in 1944. [20]

Buried in Camp Creek Cemetery, Nebraska City, Nebraska. [21]

Research Notes

  • Downey-1809: My mother Mary Ann Downey said she saw an email asking about Mary Vance. This lady remembers that her father had an aunt named Mary Vance who once lived on an indian reservation. Mom said her mother always said she thought there was supposed to be an indian in the family.
