Biography

William H. Vandermark, 74, of Dunellen, N.J., died on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, N.J. He was born in Wanamie, Pa., where he grew up, then lived in Garwood before his move to Dunellen 43 years ago. William was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Gertrude, and a sister, Eileen Ferlick. He graduated from Newport Township High School in Pennsylvania. William worked as a controller at Johansen Co., South Plainfield. The company later became Natkin, from which he retired in 1998. He then became a personal trainer and worked for The Club at Ricochet, South Plainfield. William served in the U.S. Marines during peacetime. Bill loved playing and watching football. He played in high school and later with the Jersey Oaks until he was 38. William was a member of the JJ Gardener Detachment of the Marine Corps, past president of the Dunellen Booster Club, commissioner of the Dunellen Parking Authority, member of the Dunellen Lions Club and the Somerville Elks. Bill also was a communicant of St. John's Church in Dunellen. Surviving are his wife, Gloria (Barkovitz) Vandermark; four daughters, Karen Reidy, Dunellen, Susan Witzel, Middlesex, Marla Vandermark Pfister, Manalapan and Sarah Vandermark, West N.Y.; two brothers, Harold, Wanamie, Pa., Edward, and his wife, June, Myrtle Beach S.C.; five grandchildren, Alexandra, Trevor, Paige, Jackson and Sadie. Visiting will be Thursday from 2 until 4 p.m. and 5 until 9 p.m. at the Sheenan Funeral Home, 233 Dunellen Ave., Dunellen. There will be a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at St. John's Church in Dunellen. Cremation will be private.
