Biography

Isaac (van Deventer) Vandeventer is one of twins.

Isaac and his twin brother Abraham were baptized on 5 September 1697 in the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Flatbush, Kings County, Long Island, New York, recorded as the children of Piter van Deventer and Mayke van Deventer. Witnesses for the double baptism were Hendrick Ryke, Joost van Brunt, Ytie Hendricks, and Aaltie van Brunt.[1][2] A second baptism record for these same twins also appears in the register of the Reformed Dutch Church of New York, with a date of 12 August 1704.[3] Their parents were Pieter Jansen (VanDeventer) Van Deventer and Mayke Christianse (van Doorn) van Deventer.[4]

The second baptism of the twins is explained by the fact that the 1697 baptism was not recorded by the pastor in the usual book, but instead was entered on a loose sheet of paper (documented as Flatbush paper No. 6828) along with some other baptisms, possibly with an intention to copy them into the regular book. The loose paper was found some years later among the pastor's effects. In the meantime Pieter and his family had moved from Flatbush to Monmouth County, New Jersey. Apparently the parents wanted a permanent record of the twins' baptisms, so they had them baptized in the New York Dutch Church.[5]

Isaac married Saartje Cowenhoven by about 1730, probably in Raritan, New Jersey.

Their children were:[6]

  1. Margrita (Margaret), bap. Mar. 31, 1731, in Freehold-Middletown Reformed Dutch Church, New Jersey, married Nicholas Wyckoff in 1749.
  2. Abraham, bap. Aug. 25, 1733, in Raritan, New Jersey; died young.
  3. Sarah, bap. Aug. 17, 1735, in Raritan.
  4. Peter, bap. July 27, 1742 in Readington, New Jersey; d. in 1820, in Huntington County, Pennsylvania. Abt. 1782,mar. Margaret Miller who d. in 1826,a daughter of Jacob and Barbara Miller of Hampshire County, Virginia.

  7. Jacob, bap. Mar. 19, 1749, in Readington; d. in 1825, in Fayette County, Ohio. Married Mary Slater b. in Glasgow, Scotland, a daughter of William and Jean Slater.
  8. Abraham, bap. Oct. 28, 1753, in Readington; resided for many years near Bristol, Tenn., where he died before 1837. Married about 1773, Mary Jones of English extraction.

Their son Abraham was baptized on 28 October 1753 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Readington, New Jersey, recorded as the child of Isaac Van Deventer and Sara. Witnesses were Nicholas Wykhoff and Margrietje Wykhoff.[7][8]

Isaac died at the age of about 77 in 1775 in Loudoun County, Virginia.[4][9]

Isaac was buried in 1775 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.[10]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Isaac by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Isaac:
