Biography

Notables Project
Georges Vanier is Notable.

Georges, born in 1888, was the son of Philias Vanier and Marguerite Maloney.[1]

He was a decorated officer in the First World War with the 22nd Battalion of the CEF, a unit that would later become the Royal 22nd Regiment, known as the Van Doos.[2] He would later become their commanding officer [3] and would rise to the rank of Major-General in the Canadian Army during the Second World War.[4]

He married Pauline Archer in Montréal in 1921.[5] They had five children: Thérèse, Georges, Bernard, Jean and Michel.[6]

As a diplomat, he represented Canada at the League of Nations and served as Ambassador to France after the Second World War.[3][4]

He was sworn in as Canada's 19th Governor General on September 15, 1959, the second native born Canadian to hold the post and the first French Canadian. While in office, he was appointed by the Queen to the Imperial Privy Council of the United Kingdom and also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Toronto. A sports enthusiast, he established the Vanier Cup, for the Canadian Intercollegiate football championship, and the Governor General's Fencing Award. He also created the Vanier Awards for Outstanding Young Canadians.

In 1965, the Vaniers founded the Vanier Institute of the Family after convening the Canadian Conference on the Family at Rideau Hall the previous year. The institute is an independent research and educational nonprofit organization committed to the well-being of Canadian families.[6]

General Vanier died in office on March 5, 1967.[7]
