Disambiguation
John has been conflated with another John VanMeter. Both were born within about 8 years of each other, and both married Margarets and lived in Salem County, New Jersey. Strangely, the other John had a daughter Mary around 1832 who married Samuel Simpkins in 1858, while this John had a 14-year-old Mary Simpkins living in his household in the 1860 census. This Mary would be far younger than the daughter of the other John, and furthermore Samuel Simpkins and his wife Mary appear in another census household. So seems to be just a coincidence of names.
Census Error
John's father James appears in the 1850 census at Upper Pittsgrove with a man John Vanmeter aged 27 years. Thinking this is John son of James leads to a lot of confusion, since the John who married Margaret McHaney in 1839 appears at Pittsgrove with Margaret and son Theodore.
The census entry appears to be an error. James had a younger son Joseph who was known to have married right around 1850 and lived several decades longer, but he does not seem to appear elsewhere in the census. The age 27 years would be about right for Joseph. This profile assumes the 1850 census taker mis-recorded Joseph's name as John.
