Biography

Ireland Native
John (Vans) Vance was born in Ireland.

Rector of Kilmacrenan, Donegal, Ireland

Rev. John Vans graduated with a B.A. from St. John's College in Cambridge in 1605 (his birthdate is not recorded, but presumably he was therefore born about 1585-1590). He received a Master of Arts (where is not recorded) and was ordained as Church of Ireland deacon and priest in Kilmacrenan on Feb 7, 1613. He also became rector of Movagh in 1615. The reason that we know all this is that he was remembered in a history of Church of Ireland clergy in Raphoe, which also references his graduation from Cambridge, and the graduate rolls of Cambridge do show a John Vaux graduating that year. Research Notes

The claim that John Vance graduated in 1605 seem to be awry. His father was born in 1574 so for John to have graduated in 1605 would be unlikely due to his young age. It seems more probable that John was born sometime in late 1580's or 1590's. It would therefore be improbable for him to have grauated at such a young age. I think some of the Biography needs to be amended to reflect accuracy of dates of life events. It is possible that this John Vance has been conflated with another John (Vaux) with no connection to the Barnbarroch branch of Wigtownshire. The Vance, Vans, Vaux name was widespread throughout Britain and it is possible, if not likely, that researchers have mistakenly merged two different Johns into this person. The John Vaux who graduated from Cambridge in 1605 is a name variation of Vance and shows that these people are probably not the same person.

This profile seems to be conflated, as I have found no source to say that John Vaux of Barnbarroch was married at age 14, to Margaret at age 9, nor that they had a son named John Vance. Dates do not match or make sense. Would the PM's please be able to supply proof of this son, please, before he is disconnected. Thank you.

Date of birth for father is 1597. That means the father would have only been about 10 years old when this individual was born.
