Biography

1776 Project
Garret Vansant performed Patriotic Service in Pennsylvania in the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Garret Vansant is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A118838.

Garret van Sandt was baptized on 31 December 1710 in Sammeny, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, recorded as the child of Joris van Sandt and Maycken van de Grift. The witness was Elisabet Brouwers, wife of Hermen van Sandt.[1]

He is the son of Jacobus van Sandt and Rebecca van der Grist.[2][3]

Garret married Ann Groome of Southampton on May 13, 1739 at Christ Church in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. [4][5][6]

Garret worked as a blacksmith in Southampton where he and Ann raised their nine children.[5]

Garret took the oath of allegiance in Bucks county during the American Revolution. He appears to have also served a brief stint during 1778 in the militia but was probably too old to see any combat.[7]

Garret van Sandt died sometime after July 29, 1779, when his will was dated.[8][9]

  • The children attached to this profile appear correct (according to Davis).
    • Question: Davis says the will mentions "Mary and Rebecca Walton". It looks like Mary has been attached as a daughter. Is Rebecca Mary's daughter? How do we know it's not the other way around?
    • Answer: In "Byberry Waltons : an account of four English brothers, Nathaniel & Thomas & Daniel & William Walton" pg 63 Mary Vansant, daughter of Garret Vansant and Anne Groome, is mentioned as marrying Abel Walton. Rebecca Walton is a daughter of Garret and Ann Groome Vansant, who was married to Henry Walton. These marriages are also verified in "U.S., Presbyterian Church Records, 1701-1970"

I am increasingly confused about the claims being made here. It is important for all of us to remember that if Dutch naming customs were followed, as many as 8 grandsons of Gerrit (Stoffelszen) van Sandt (abt.1644-bef.1706) would be named Gerrit van Sandt (or some spelling variation). It appears that not all of his sons had sons, but there still may be many Gerrit van Sandts to sort.

I am convinced that the baptism on 31 December 1710 was of Gerrit, the child of Joris van Sandt and Maycken van de Grift. That corresponds to Gerrit (Vansant) van Sandt (1710-) (who, by the way, should not be labeled with the nickname George). The child baptized on 31 December was not a child of Jacobus van Sandt and Rebecca van der Grist. Joris and Jacob are different names, and Maycken and Rebecca also are different names. The indication that they were equated in Davis' History of Bucks County does not somehow change that. There are other records of the baptisms of children of Jacob and Rebecca, the December 1710 baptism is not one of them.

I agree that the birth/baptism date of 1711 may have been an estimate by Davis to avoid having to explain how Jacob and Rebecca had children baptised in May and December of 1710, but it appears that Davis had conflated the two couples, and anyway the child baptised in May 1710 probably was not nearly a newborn.

That baptism recorded at Philadelphia of Garrad looks to me like it is correctly interpreted as baptism of a son of Jacob van Sandt that took place at Bensalem. The left hand column says Bensa lem (split onto two lines), the month is 4 (carried over from the previous entry), the day is 23, and the entry reads "Cornelia Daughter of Herman van Sandt & Garrad (line split) Son of Jacob Van Sandt".

So I see a good basis for separating two distinct Gerrit/Garrads. But that does not resolve the question of which one married Anne Groome and had all those children (or is it correct to treat all of these as one marriage and one family?).

Ellen, thank you. Please can you make the adjustment "separating two distinct Gerrit/Garrads." And do the detach from Jacobus and Rebecca. Appreciate you expertise as always.
