Pearson says that William Teller married Maria Varlett in 1664. Accordingly, she could not be the mother of his children who were born earlier than 1664. The only children of William Teller identified as born after 1664 are Jannetje and Caspar.

Moreover, please remember that Pearson is not a reliable source. His work was very good, but he did not identify most of his sources, and there are a number of instances where more recent researchers have found errors in his work (perhaps because they had access to resources he didn't have). Sometimes Pearson is the best available source, but we always should try to confirm his information from reliable sources.

Gotcha!  Thanks for filling me in and I will do my best to remember to follow up on anything Pearson!

Have a great day! Tanya

Edwin R. Purple provided solid and well-sourced account of her life (far better than what appears on this profile as of 31 March 2022) in two installments of "CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT FAMILIES OF NEW YORK" in NYGBR in 1878. First part is at https://archive.org/details/newyorkgenealog789gree/page/1081/mode/2up?view=theater and second installment is at https://archive.org/details/newyorkgenealog789gree/page/1169/mode/2up?view=theater

Interesting point about the marriage date. However, since the Dutch (unlike the English) were using the Gregorian calendar, double-dating isn't relevant for New Netherland in this period. I wonder if the marriage in February 1654 in the Stadt House Inn is the one that the high and mighties invalidated in September 1654. One would think that the couple would have acted pretty quickly after that to get their marriage validated -- they wouldn't have waited until February.

From the attached PDF about the February marriage, it's apparent that there was an unusual amount of concern about legalities, but I can tell whether this occurred after the High and Mighties acted, or if it documents unusual circumstances of the first ceremony.

I have confirmed that her first marriage was not recorded in the New Amsterdam church.

Because of the double date issue, her first marriage should probably be dated 19 Feb 1655 (following the Sep. 1654 decree).
