James Albert "Jim" Varney Jr. was born in Fayette County, Kentucky, United States in 1949[1] to James Albert Varney of Virginia and Nancy Howard of Kentucky.

Jim began acting at a young age, eventually becoming a television and film actor best known for starring in a series of commercials and movies as the fictional character Ernest P. Worrell. In 1989, Jim won a Daytime Emmy for this role. He later provided the voice for the character Slinky Dog in the award-winning film series Toy Story.

He was married twice, with the second union ending in 1991. Neither marriage resulted in children.

Jim, a heavy smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in Aug 1998. He passed away at his home in White House, Sumner County, Tennessee on 10 Feb 2000.[2][3]

He is buried at the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky.[4]
