Jim began acting at a young age, eventually becoming a television and film actor best known for starring in a series of commercials and movies as the fictional character Ernest P. Worrell. In 1989, Jim won a Daytime Emmy for this role. He later provided the voice for the character Slinky Dog in the award-winning film series Toy Story.
He was married twice, with the second union ending in 1991. Neither marriage resulted in children.
Jim, a heavy smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in Aug 1998.
He passed away at his home in White House, Sumner County, Tennessee on 10 Feb 2000.
He is buried at the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky.
