Biography

Henry Foster Varty was born on 21 November 1863. He was the second son of Thomas Varty and Ann Kirby.

He was baptised on 7 April 1864 (along with his sister Eva Florence Varty) at Pietermaritzburg, Natal[1]. His father was a Farmer of Riet Vlei, Umvoti.

Sadly his 11 year old sister Grace Violet Varty died on 6 October 1881, due to heart disease.

At the age of 31 Harry married Margaret Oxtoby on 18 May 1895 at the residence of Mr. W. F. Marshall at Mountainside, Umvoti in the Colony of Natal, after Banns[2]. Henry was a Farmer of Umvoti Heights. The witnesses were Thomas Boyd Varty Jr. and Florence B. Marshall.

They went on to have at least three children.

His mother Ann passed away in 1905.

Henry fought in the Second Anglo Boer War in the division known as "Murray's Horse". He was entitled to the South Africa Medal.

His son Guy Herbert Foster Varty died on 1 August 1933 at about age 34. Nearly three years later, his wife Margaret passed away on 5 May 1936 at age 69.

His Last Will and Testament was dated 3 August 1945. He appointed his son Thomas Boyd French Varty to be the Administrator and Executor of his Estate.

He passed away on 24 December 1945 at the age of 82[3]. Cause of death was recorded as Old Age. The intended place of burial was in Municipal Cemetery, Greytown, Natal.
