Biography
Herbert Augustus Varty was born on 1 December 1875. He was the son of Thomas Varty and Ann Kirby.
Sadly his 11 year old sister Grace Violet Varty died on 6 October 1881, due to heart disease.
He fought in the Anglo Boer war in the division known as "Murray's Horse".
At the age of 29 Herbert married 24 year old Nellie Stoddart on 28 May 1906 in the Wesleyan Church, Chapel Street at Pietermaritzburg, Natal, after Banns[1]. He was a Civil Servant of Scottburg.
They had at least six children. Tragically his youngest son Herbert Rex Boyd Varty was killed in the 2nd World War on 22 February 1941.
His wife Nellie died on 19 July 1962.
Herbert was a retired Government Civil Servant, living at 1 Russel Avenue, Pietermaritzburg when he passed away on 31 August 1962[2]. Cause of death was recorded as Coronary Thrombosis, Arterio Sclerosis and Chronic Bronchitis.
He was buried at Mountain Rise Cemetery, Pietermaritzburg, uMgungundlovu District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa[3].
