Biography

Flag of Cumberland (adopted 2012)
William Varty was born in Cumberland, England.

William Varty was born in 1742. He was the son of Jonathan Varty and Hannah Tallentire.

He was Christened on 29 April 1742 at St. Andrews, Penrith, Cumberland[1].

His mother Hannah passed away in 1855. His father remarried, to Grace Cannon (the widow of Jonathan Tinniswood) on 19 December 1756.

William married Ann Newby (the daughter of John Newby and Elizabeth Cannon) on 20 July 1767 at Saint Andrew's Church, Penrith, Cumberland[2].

They went on to have at least nine children.

William is mentioned in his uncle William Varty's last Will and Testament dated 11 November 1771.

His father Jonathan died on 11 July 1789 at about age 79.

On Tuesday the 28th day of May 1799 his son William was admitted into the Freedom of the City by redemption in the Company of Woolmen paying unto Mr. Chamberlain the sum of forty six shillings and eight pence.

William was apparently quite a well-off linen-draper, residing in Bishopsgate Street in the City of London. There is a Deed of his Estate held by the Cumbria Archive Centre, Carlisle which details the sale of freehold fields called Pategill, Far Barco, Little and Great Scaw which he probably inherited from his father Jonathan.

Covers 1756-1814; including his Will (proved at Carlisle 1814); with Opinions at end, of William Lee (Lincoln's Inn, 3 June 1829) and W Jones (Crosby Square, 4 June 1829), 1829.

In August 1812 John Banks (aged 54) was charged with stealing three heifers, the property of William Varty, out of a field in the parish of Penrith. He was found guilty at trial.

William passed away in April 1814. He was buried on 1 May 1814 at St. Andrew's Churchyard, Penrith, Cumberland, England[3][4].

Lancaster Gazette 07 May 1814, page 3:
