Ann was born in 1821. She was the thirteenth child of Jonathan Varty and Elizabeth Newby. Her mother was 40 years of age when she was born. Sadly many of her siblings died young.

Ann was born in Liverpool where her father worked in the business of Newby & Varty Coachbuilders. By 1841 her father had retired and she moved back to Stag Stones, Inglewood Forest, Penrith, Cumberland with her parents and sister Elizabeth. Ann was about 20 years of age.
On 5 October 1846 Ann married George Smith (son of George Smith) at Edenhall Church in Edenhall, Cumberland, England.[2]
UK Census Date 1851: Ann was living on a farm at Edenhall, Cumberland, England with her husband and two children; 2 year old Augusta and baby George. Also in the household were 9 servants comprised of housemaids, nursemaids, cowmen and farm servants.
Occupation: Farmer's Wife
By 1871 Ann and George's family had grown to include five children. They were still resident at Edenhall, Cumberland at a property called The Luham. There were five servants recorded in the household.
Her husband passed away in 1879 and in 1881 Ann was still living in Edenhall with her 5 children and 5 servants.
Occupation: Annuitant
Ann passed away in 1908.
