Fred Vasey was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England.

Birth
Fred, the illegitimate son of Eliza Jane Vasey, was born at 4 Dumple Street, Scarbotough, Yorkshire, on 8 January1864.[1][2]

1871 Census
The 2 April 1871 census records Fred living with his grandparents at 4 Dumple Street, Scarborough[3] as follows:

Marriage
Fred married Clara Cordukes by banns at All Saints church, Scarborough, on 25 December 1888. Fred was described as aged 25, a Bachelor, occupation Hair Dresser, resident at 9 Hanover Road, son of John Alfred Vasey, a Coachman. Witnesses were St Clair Smart and Annie Collinson.[5][6][7]

Fred and Clara had four children:

  1. Ida, born at Scarborough on 10 October 1889[8] and baptized at All Saints church, Scarborough, on 14 November 1889.[9]
  2. Eric, born at Scarborough in 1892[10] and baptized at All Saints church, Scarborough, on 19 May 1892.[11]
  3. Fred, born at Scarborough in 1895.[12]
  4. Ewart, born at Scarborough on 3 August 1898.[13]

The 5 April 1891 census records Fred living with his family at 20 Franklin Street, Scarborough[14] as follows:

Death
Fred died at Scarborough in 1900.[15]

Research Notes

As noted above, Fred's birth registration has no mother's maiden name. Furthermore, he was living with his grandparents in the 1871 census. So who were his parents? The marriage register[16] lists his father as John Alfred Vasey, a coachman. Witnesses were St Clair Smart (Fred's maternal uncle) and Annie Collinson.

My first thought is that Fred was an illegitimate son of one of the daughters of his grandparents. Fred's grandparents were George Vasey and his wife Sarah, née Newton, who had been married at Scarborough on 20 July 1837.[17] They had children as follows:

  1. Sarah Ann, born in 1838.[18]
  2. Emily, born in 1841.[19]
  3. Eliza Jane, born in 1843[20], died in 1844.[21]
  4. Henry, born and died in 1845.[22][23]
  5. Janey, born in 1846.[24]
  6. George Henry, born in 1849.[25]
  7. Charles, born in 1852.[26]
  8. Alfred, born in 1854.[27]
  9. Lorenzo, born in 1856.[28]

The family are living at Scarborough in the 1851[29] and 1861[30] census records. However, in the latter, their youngest son is listed as Edward, not Lorenzo.

Fred was born in 1864. Therefore, can any of the children be eliminated as Fred's parents?

  • It is noteworthy that there is an Alfred, and Fred's father was named as John Alfred. However, Alfred would only have been ten years old when Fred was born, so very unlikely to be Fred's father.
  • Emily married Robert Alfred Thompson at Scarborough on 29 December 1862.[31] Therefore Emily is elimated as Fred's mother.
  • Sarah Ann, who was single in the 1871 census[32] was living with a widower Robert Thompson, Emily having died in 1867.[33] Sarah Ann had banns published in 1872, and 1873, and finally married Robert Alfred Thompson in 1875.[34] Sarah Ann would, therefore, be a candidate.
  • I have so far been able to find nothing about Janey.
  • The younger boys seem less likely, although are not ruled out.

Since there is no obvious single candidate, for Fred's parents, I'll order his birth certificate from the UK GRO. 11 August 2022. I've now received Fred's birth certificate 22 August 2022.

The birth certificate states that Eliza Jane was the mother of Fred. Yet above, I had Eliza Jane as dying when just a year old. However, the 1861 census shows the Vasey family living at 4 Dumple Street, Scarborough, and Eliza Jane is listed as age 14.[35] Referring back to birth registrations, there is a female Vasey, with no forenames given, born at Scarborough in 1846 with mother's maiden name Newton.[36] This must be for Eliza Jane, Fred's mother, born after the death of her old namesake. I also believe that this is the "Janey" referred to in the children list above.

The 1881 census referred to above lists Fred lodgng with spinster Hannah Newton, likely to be his maternal great aunt. Also lodging is his uncle Alfred Vasey.
