Biography

Adelaide was a niece of Boifacio del Vasto (Vasto-11) lord of Savona, margrave of western Liguria, in his time the most powerfull "marchese" of what is nowday Italy. He acted as her tutor at the death of her father Manfredo when he was killed. They all belonged to a branch of the Aleramici family ruling a large "state" with domains scattered between south of Piedmont, western Liguria and parts of what is now south-eastern France. In 1089, aged 14, Adelaide was married to Roger I Altavilla (Hauteville-41), great count of Sicily, while two of her sisters married Roger's sons from previous relationships: Jordan count of Syracuse and Geoffrey count of Ragusa (the latter could have died before marriage took place). Also her brother Enrico moved to Sicily and married Roger's daughter Flandina, completing the alliance with Bonifacio family and becoming a very powerfull lord in Sicily. After her first husband, Roger Altavilla, 1st count of Sicily, died in 1101, Adelaide kept the regency on behalf of her son Ruggero II and in 1112 was married by the king of Jerusalem, Baudouin de Boulogne that was very interested to her wealth as countess of Sicily to pay his debts. However he was already married and his previous Armenian wife still alive was kept in a monastery. He was therefore obliged in 1117 to repudiate Adelaide that returned to Sicily where she retired in Patti (Messina) and died in 1118. I received an invitation to check and revise data and biography of Vasto-1 after a merge, that I did. Somebody removed half of the biography (why???) and I am unable to restore the full text.

Monferrato-3 and Vasto-1 appear to represent the same person because: Vasto and Monferrato are two branches of the same "Aleramici" House . In some sources the wife of Roger I Altavilla , King of Sicily , Adelaide del Vasto is wrongly quoted as Adelasia di Monferrato. They are the same person and shall be merged.

This is among 4 duplicates for Adelisa, #1, 2, 3, & 8. They should be merged.
