Sarah Vaughan was a four-time Grammy winning jazz pianist and singer with a three- to four-octave range and a career spanning 1942-1990.[1][2]
Sarah was born to Asbury and Ada Lee (Baylor) Vaughan, in Newark, New Jersey, on March 27, 1924.[3]
She grew up in Newark,[4][5]
and sang in the Mount Zion Baptist Church until 1943. She performed in her first concert, at the Mosque Theatre in Newark, on October 9, 1948, co-starring with Illinois Jacquet and his band; her parents attended.[6]
She was married three times, to George Treadwell (from 1946–1958), to Clyde Atkins[7]
(from 1958–1961), and to Waymon Reed[8]
(from 1978–1981), and adopted her only child, daughter Debra Lois "Paris" Vaughan, in 1961.
Sarah Vaughan died on 3 April 1990 in California,[9]
and was buried in the Crestwood Section of Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield, New Jersey.[10]
