In the 1850 census we find Jerry living with his mother Letty along with his brother James, and his sisters Mary and Letty.

1850 Mecklenburg Co., VA census:

132 132 VAUGHAN Letty 40 VA (1810)
132 132 VAUGHAN Mary 14 F VA (1836)
132 132 VAUGHAN James 12 M VA (1838)
132 132 VAUGHAN Jerry 10 M VA (1840)--- [1842]
132 132 VAUGHAN Letty 7 VA (1843)

  • The date in the census for him seems to be 2 years off.

Because of this there has been some discussion about his age. The first record is the census record from 1850 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. 1840, in 1870 in the Stewart Co., TN census it is 1839, in 1880, it is 1838, in 1900 it is Mar 1840 The next is in a letter he wrote to the newspaper where he stated "I was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, March 15, 1842." and the next is in his death certificate, that states March 15 1840, this is the date that the informant stated when the death certificate was filled out, the informant being T. P. Vaughan, his son.. The next is his tombstone which shows Mar 15, 1842.

I tend to believe he knew when he was born and thusly stated it in the letter to the newspaper, then the family looked it up somewhere when the tombstone was ordered.

W.T.(Jerry) arrived in Stewart County around July 1860[8]. He then worked on the farm of Mrs Emily Ragsdale in Trigg County, Kentucky in 1861 and returned to Indian Mound in 1862. In 1886 J.R. Knight deeded to L. J. and her husband, W. T. Vaughan, a tract of 102 acres. (May 1 1883, Book 32, Page 145). The land is located on Dicks Fork Creek, in Stewart County near Indian Mound, up Rorie holler.

W.T. sold Sewing Machines, organs and later ran a General Merchandise. His store was located in Indian Mound on the corner of today's highway 46 and Honey Fork road. His son Tilden took over the store around 1900. W. T. Vaughan could still be clearly read painted on the store all the way up until it burned around 1955. He was a Baptist and at one time Deacon in the Cross Creek Baptist Church in Indian Mound, TN. He was also a Mason, and member of the Indian Mound Loge #303.

Unfortunately no pictures of W. T. have surfaced, no one seems to have a picture of him that we can positively identify. I can however remember seeing a picture of him and his wife Lucy, I was a young boy, second grade in school, and was staying with my Grand parents. One day in the store, I was talking to Papa Vaughan (our cosy name for T. P. Vaughan) and we were talking about family members and Papa was telling me about my father, after he was finished, I asked him about his father. He told me his name and pointed out the name that had adorned the store for many years, it was dim but quiet legible, "W. T. Vaughan". Papa said he would show me a picture of him sometime. Which he did the next day, when at lunch in the house he picked up a large photo album and carried it down to the store. Later that afternoon when no customers were around he took me on his knee and thumbed through the album and pointed out his Mother and Fathers picture to me. Afraid it has simply been too many years between that day and now for me to be able to conjure up a recollection of their features as to be able to pick them out on other photos. The Stewart County Historical Society has a picture on their web site of a group of Masons, taken around 1900, in front of the Mason Hall in Indian Mound. I strongly suspect W. T. Vaughan to be one of the men pictured there. Sure wish that old picture album would surface.

We find his parents names on his death certificate[9]:

Father:
David Vaughan
born: I think Scotland
Mother:
Lettie
born: do not know

The informant in this case was Tilden P. Vaughan, William T. (Jerry) Vaughan's son.
