Biography

Elizabeth Vaughan, daughter of Thomas of Tretower, Breconshire & Cicely ferch Morgan,[1][2] married three times:

  1. Thomas Cokesey (otherwise Greville), before 1497 - Thomas died 6 March 1497/8[1][3]
  2. John Grey, as his 2nd wife, before 26 Nov. 1498[1]
  3. Edward Stanley, as his 2nd wife, before 25 Nov. 1501[4]

Her son Thomas Stanley was born in 1507.[5]

She died in 1515.[6]

Research Notes

Estimated Birth "after 1470", although "before 1485" would have a stronger basis in fact: her mother died before 1485 (when her father was known to have remarried - see his profile).

Based solely on the birth date of her son (1507), given the time and place,[7] I would guess her birth year to be about 1490 - so she was probably born closer to 1485 than to her husband's birth year, which his profile has as about 1453 (unsourced). While he could certainly be a father at 54 (1507-1453=54), women at the time were seldom mothers after their mid-30s, which puts the earliest date for Elizabeth's birth at about 1470 (rounded down from 1507-35=1472).

The "low end" birth year guess of "after 1470" works better than "before 1485" with the 1439 birth year shown on her mother's profile (31 instead of 46), although 1439 is from an unreliable source ("Tudor Place" - see her profile) and is apparently based on the assumption that Cicely was 21 when her son Harry was born, in 1460 (also sourced to "Tudor Place").

Death Date: 15 January 1515.[8] She died before he wrote his will, on 5 April 1523.[9]

Daughters of landed families were often married by contract well before then, sometimes living in the household of their intended until they were of an age to consummate the marriage (in England, generally 16 or 17).

Among the sources cited for the entry for Elizabeth is Bartrum's chart Drymbenog 2 (C2), which includes "Elsbeth d 1514" married Edward Stanley, "b.c.1460, d.1523".
