Biography

Mary Ann was born about 1862. She is the daughter of John Vaughan and Ellen Page and migrated to NZ with them in 1863.

She married John Black in 1883. They moved to Sydney around 1910.

She passed away in 1935 age 72:

MRS JOHN BLACK (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, August 7. From Sydney comes news of the' death of a former well-known Southland resident, Mrs John Black, mother of the popular Black family of musicians who were well known throughout New Zealand and Australia, where they toured successfully for many years. Born in Toronto, Canada, and baptised in the parish of Badger, Shropshire, England, Mrs Black came to New Zealand when a small child with her parents, Mr and Mrs John Vaughan, who settled in Riverton, where she lived until her marriage with Mr John Black at Riverton. She received her earliest musical training from Mrs John Hunter, and besides officiating at the organ in the Anglican Church took part in the musical life of the western town. Mr and Mrs Black then removed to Invercargill, where they were for many years engaged in the teaching of music. As the young family grew up they developed exceptional talent, and their success in Southland and the Southern Lakes district decided Mr Black, that they should go further afield. As a concert party they not only travelled in all parts of the Dominion but also in Australia and the South Sea Islands with gratifying results. Mrs Black, acted as accompanist, and her daughter Nellie, a fine vocalist as well as a gifted violinist, was the star attraction. Some 25 years ago the parents retired to live in Sydney, Miss Nellie Black carrying on her professional career for many years, during which she toured in the East. Mrs Black, who had attained the age of 72 years, was predeceased by her husband, and of a family of five two daughters survive—Elsie (Mrs J. Garrett) and Nellie (Mrs James Prentice), both residing in Sydney. [1]
