Biography

Aristophus (Aris) T. Vaughan is buried in Floyd County, KY at 2 Tara Lane, Prestonsburg, Ky. Also at the Intersection of N Lake Drive & Hwy 114, Prestonsburg, KY. GPS Bearing N 37 deg, 41.702' and W 082 deg, 46.048'.

Aris took part in the battle of Guilford Court House on March 25, 1781. He signed the Oath of Allegiance to the United States in January 1777. He provided material aid to a hospital for Revolutionary War soldiers. Source Approved Supplemental Application for Richard Wayne Osborn, National Number 150208, Missouri State number 2058. This lineage is from Richard Wayne Osborn to Glen Wilson Osborn to Vern Ross Osborn to Andrew Jackson Osborn, born in Floyd County, KY, who married Elizabeth Burchett, to her father Thomas James Burchett who married Letitia Vaughn all also of Floyd County, KY. Letitia Vaughan's father was Leroy Vaughn a son of Aris Vaughn, Jr. then to the patriot Aristophus T. Vaughn.

Proof of his full first name is found in the 1790 tax digest of Campbell Co., VA. His name traces back to Aristippus, a Libyan philosopher, who studied under Socrates and later adopted the “ethical hedonism” philosophy.

Aris Vaughan appears in a number of early tax digests in Virginia.

King and Queen Co. 1783, 1787
Campbell Co. 1790-1791
Henry Co. 1793-1810

He did not pay his taxes consistently until 1793 in Henry Co. After he left Henry Co., VA he next appeared in the 1820 Census of Floyd Co., KY. He is said to have died in 1842 in Floyd Co., KY at the age of 100 years old! He was too old to be the son of William Vaughan and Fereby Benton; and all his records are in VA rather than NC.

His possible and probable sons are as follows

Richard b. < 1765 (Probable) Campbell, VA 1786-1790
Phill b. < 1768 (Probable) Campbell, VA 1789-1791
