Proof of his full first name is found in the 1790 tax digest of Campbell Co., VA. His name traces back to Aristippus, a Libyan philosopher, who studied under Socrates and later adopted the “ethical hedonism” philosophy.
Aris Vaughan appears in a number of early tax digests in Virginia.
He did not pay his taxes consistently until 1793 in Henry Co. After he left Henry Co., VA he next appeared in the 1820 Census of Floyd Co., KY. He is said to have died in 1842 in Floyd Co., KY at the age of 100 years old! He was too old to be the son of William Vaughan and Fereby Benton; and all his records are in VA rather than NC.
