Joseph was born in August 1860 in Kentucky, the son of James Albert Vaughn (1835-1914) and Sallie E. Lewis (1837-1870). Joseph married Mary Ann Hinds in Manitoba, Canada about 1890. They had at least five children. Joseph died 23 May 1901 in Bottineau, North Dakota, where he is also buried. Joseph and Mary Ann’s children are:

The household included Henry (Joseph) Vaughn, born Aug 1860, 40, born in Kentucky, as were his parents, a farmer, who owned his farm without a mortgage. Henry and his wife had lived in Canada, and had immigrated to North Dakota in 1896; his wife, Mary, b. Aug 1871, 29, b. Canada, as were her parents. Both could read and write; their four children, William, 7, b. March 1893 in Canada; George, 5, b. Feb 1895 in Canada; Henry, 3, b. Jan 1897 in North Dakota; and Gertrude, an infant, b.
