Biography

OBITUARY The Greenville News (SC) - Thursday, July 23, 1942, James W. Vaughn, 88, died last night at 7:55 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ila Watson, 18 Norwood avenue, after declining health of two years and a serious illness of a week.

Mr. Vaughn was born and reared in Greenville county, and was a son of the late David and Betsy Kemp Vaughn. He was married to Miss Sallie Liester who died two years ago.

Surviving are three sons, E. D., R. A. and J. E. Vaughn; five daughters, Mrs. Hattie Watson, Mrs. Betty Brookshire, Mrs. Tweet Smith, Mrs. Ila Watson and Mrs. Ophelia Copeland; a brother, P. W. Vaughn; 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist church.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Wood mortuary of Greer.

Funeral services for James W. Vaughn, 88, will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Brushy Creek Baptist Church and will be conducted by Rev. Benjamin Sorgee, assisted by Rev. George Smith and Rev. Grange Cothran.

Burial will be in the family plot in the church cemetery.

Mr. Vaughn died Wednesday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ila Watson, 18 Norwood Avenue, after two years of declining health and a serious illness of a week.

Pallbearers will be the following grandsons: Clarence Brookshire, Roscoe Smith, Newton Smith, Jerome Smith, Woodrow and Everette Watson.

Deacons of Roper Mountain Baptist Church are asked to meet at the church at 1:45 o'clock and serve as honorary pallbearers.

The body will be carried to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Betty Brookshire, in the Pleasant Grove community near Greer, at 9 o'clock Friday morning.
