Biography

Investigation needed ... I found on dau. Petronilla's page and posted herein the text and sources below ... afterward discovering that this info conflicts (re: the mother of Maud, who m. de Ros), with Richardson and BHO, which both state that her mother was Joan _____, widow of Roger de Gyney, rather than Sibyl. [1] [2]

John de Vaux died in 1288, the 16th Year of the Reign of Edward I. 1288. By his wife Sybil, he left two daughters, between whom his vast possessions, amounting to no less than Forty-four Knights' Fees, were divided.

Petronilla, the eldest, married William de Nerford, whose heirs afterward married into the Family of Dacres.

Maud, the second daughter, became the wife of William de Ros, An ancestor to the present Duke of Rutland.

  • Lots of sources shown on Petronilla's profile (added below), but I know not from which the above is quoted.

Despite what Blomefield says, isn't the IPM of John saying that Maud the wife of William Gyney was his actually the daughter of John Vaux, who then remarried to William de Ros? https://archive.org/details/cu31924011387804/page/402/mode/2up?q=Nerford

Appointed Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk c1283 (en.Wikipedia) but I cannot find a verification of the two sons, even John Burke’s Heraldic Dictionary page 548 doesn’t show them. Wife Sybilla, can find no source for her being a Longchamps (only on Ancestry.co.uk - unverified) even Geni.com says unverifiable which is highly unusual for them!

I don't see a third daughter in the couple sources that I checked. Do you have other sources besides that to know which John was Ethama's father? I don't have access to my MCA books since I'm out of the country at present...
John was probably born in Norfolk, England, not in the Aquitaine. Might also want to add a daughter: Ethana (or Ethama) spouse of William De Maule and mother of Maule-166.

Note: Dan posted on my profile page that he didn't know what I meant. What I'd meant was that in WikiTree, Maud was daughter of John (and Jane, who until recently did not have profile) & John was (by WikiTree) shown to be the son of Sybil. By showing Maud as the daughter of Sybil, who WikiTree showed yesterday as her grandmother, a generation (mother Jane) was being "compressed".

Dan - it looks like you're editing these profiles to compress a generation. Please check your sources. Thanks!
