My father's parents lived in 196 Garston Old Road, opposite Garston Park, they moved there from 36 Gladeville Road, Aigburth where they lived when they were married in 1898. Grandfather was a cycle builder, and had a retail outlet in Garston. I remember the house had a dark red sandstone sink and in a large shed in the yard was a dolly tub, ringer and gas boiler. There was a huge brown leather chaise in the room and a large chest of drawers. When we visited as children, we had to sit very quietly and not speak unless spoken to. My father's parents were very strict Victorians and if my father was late home when still living at home, he would find the door locked and had to climb up the drain pipe to get in through the bedroom window. This was when he was courting my mother, he was nearly 28!! Jack was a Cycle Builder, during the war years, he used gas pipes to make the frames, he had ten siblings.
