Martha was born in 1853 in Fort Beaufort, Cape Colony; she was the daughter of James Verity and Elizabeth Walker.

She was 22 years old when she married 24 year old Thomas Baker in the Wesleyan Chapel in Healdtown, Fort Beaufort, on 16 November 1875.^[1]
