Biography

Johannes Vermilje

Marriages

Johannes Vermilje married Sarah Odell on Oct. 29, 1713. On the same day, his sister Hannah Vermilye married her brother John Odell. The marriages were recorded at the Manhattan, Reformed Dutch Church of NY.[1]

Sarah Odell Vermilje died, about 1733, possibly from complications in delivering daughter Rebeckah.

Johannes/John Vermilyea then married Marytje DeBruyn/Brown Bussing, the widow of Johannes Bussing. (Johannes Bussing was the nephew of Johannes Vermilyea, as it happened.) This must have happened about 1735, but no record of the event has yet surfaced.

Death

Presumably he died in Yonkers, where he signed his will, probably in April 1782.

Children

Johannes Vermilyea had about 13 children, all born in Lower Yonkers, Westchester, Province of New York. Which children were born to which of his wives is disputed. Based on the analysis of Sandra Vermilea Todd, the division that follows appears more likely than others.[3]

Johannes and Sarah Odell Vermilyea had, in Yonkers, on these approximate dates:

  • unnamed child, b. 1714, died young
  • Johannes/John, b. about 1716
  • Antje/Anna, b. 1718
  • Abraham, b. 1721
  • Aeltie, b. 1723
  • Maritie, b. 1728, m. Johannes Waldron, her second cousin
  • Sarah, b. 1731, not mentioned in father's will so likely died young
  • Rebecca, b. 1733

Johannes and Marytje Brown Bussing Vermilyea had, in Yonkers:

  • Joshua, b. 1735
  • Frederick, b. 1737
  • Gerardus b. 1739
  • David, b. 1741
  • Benjamin, b. about 1743, m. Elizabeth Nodine

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Vermilye-38 and Vermilye-2 appear to represent the same person because: Both profile the same man, who married Sarah Odell as his second wife. (There are two profiles for Sarah, also being merged.) Vermilye-38, which I just became the manager to facilitate the merge i'm proposing, has no other facts, But the profiles should be merged to eliminate the duplication.
