Biography

ELIZABETH VERNEY (c.1558-March 1592)

Elizabeth Verney, although said in some genealogies to have been the daughter of Sir Henry Verney and have had Queen Elizabeth as her godmother, was in fact the daughter of Hugh Verney of Fairfield, Somerset.[1] Her first husband was William Palmer of Parham, Sussex (c.1554-December 24, 1586). Although numerous other children are listed online, they had only four: Thomas, (June 24, 1574-c.1605), Catherine (1579-September 30, 1609), William (1583-April 1585), and Sarah (1586/7-1633). Elizabeth was never married to John Palmer, younger brother of her first husband. To further confuse matters, in her widowhood she corresponded with Richard Stephens and he referred to her as his sister. They were not, in fact, related. They were both of the Puritan persuasion and she was seeking spiritual guidance about the selection of her second husband. In 1589, she was considering Sir William Bowes of Streatlam, Durham (d.1611) but on the advice of her correspondent she rejected him, even though they shared a preference for the preaching of one Whitfield, for not being strict enough in his religious beliefs. In June 1590, the earl of Essex dined with her at Parham. He had two candidates for her to consider, Henry Savile of Oxford (1549-1622) and Henry Bromley of Holt Castle, Warwickshire (March 9, 1556-May 15, 1615).

On 26 Nov 1591, she married Bromley as his second wife.[1] One source gives the date of their wedding as November 21, 1592, but she was buried on March 17 of that year. She may have had a son by Bromley. He married twice more. His third wife was Anne Knatchbull (née Scott) and his fourth was Anne Offley (née Beswick)

Wow, this profile has a lot of managers - the parents are incorrect so please remove both. The correct father is Hugh Verney, cited in the bio but I don't have much in the way of details.

Here is the correct list of children of William (John) Palmer and Elizabeth Verney from "Berry's Sussex" genealogies

1) Sir Thomas born 1574 died circa 1605 2) Katherine born 1579 3) William born 1583 died 1585 4) Sarah born 1586/7

These other children DO NOT belong to the Palmer/Verney family.

Child: Abraham Palmer Child: Walter Palmer Child: William Palmer (NOT to be confused with the William who died at age 2) Child: John Palmer Child: John Palmer Child: John Palmer Child: William Palmer (listed twice)

Additionally, the John Palmer and the 2 William Palmers that she married are all the same person.
