Obituary: Charley Vernon, Early Sulphur Settler, Dies
Man Helped Move City To Present Site From Park
Last rites for Charley Stwart Vernon, 68, who had lived in Sulphur the past 38 years, will be held at First Baptist church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Robert S. Scales, pastor, officiating. Vernon died Sunday night at 8:30 o'clock in a local hospital as the result of a recent illness. Dunn Funeral home is making all arrangements. Pall bearers named are Harry Jennings, Oscar Young, Sylvester Peak, Grady Allen, Noble Snodgrass, and L. D. Drake. Interment will be at Oaklawn cemetary, Sulphur. Many Survivors Here Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Nancy Vernon of the home; five sons -- Ernest, Archie, and Amos Vernon, Sulphur; Lee Vernon, Oklahoma City; and Willie Vernon, Vivian, Louisiana. There are also two sisters and brother, Mrs. M. E. Yates, Panhandle, Texas; Mrs. Lee Yates, Poolville, Texas; and E. C. Vernon, Olympia, Washington. Vernon was born February 13, 1873, in Texas and spent his early life in Wise county in that state. He came to Oklahoma 47 years agoand to Sulphur in 1902. Vernon helped move the city to its present location and was Sulphur chief of police at one time. He is a member of the Baptist denomination.
