Jonathan is listed in the Revolutionary accounts in the N.C. Archives at Raleigh, N.C., as being paid for furnishing sundries to the N.C. Militia. Jonathan lived for a while in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Then he owned land and lived in Cornwell Parish in Charlotte County, Virginia, before moving to Surry County, N.C. between 1773 and 1779.
On 13 Oct 1783, Jonathan Vernon, Sr. was granted by the state of North Carolina 500 acres on Coleman's Creek in Surry County. He deeded land he still owned in Charlotte County, Virginia to one of his sons just before he died.
