Biography

Sir William Vernon was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

William de Vernon was the son of Richard de Vernon and his wife, Avice Avenal.^[1]

William occurs in 3 Henry III [1218-19] in the Derbyshire Pipe Rolls and in 20 Henry III [[1235-36] in the Testa de Nevill.^[1]

Richard de Vernon and Avice his wife, and William de Vernon their son and heir, confirm to Azer, son of Nigel, a virgate of land in Adstock, (co Bucks) in the time of Richard I or John.^[2]

William Vernon of Haddon and Harlaston, married Margaret, daughter of Robert de Stokeport, the following is a translation of the grant by Sir Robert de Stokeport:^[2]

"Know all both present and to come that I, Robert de Stocheport, have given and granted, and by this my present charter have confirmed to William, son and heir of Richard de Vernon, the land of Baselawe and Bunbunhul, with all its appurtenances. With Margarit, my daughter, in free marriage. But truly if the aforesaid William shall not have an heir of the said Margarit, the aforesaid William and the heirs of the said Richard de Vernon shall hold half of the said land of Baselawe, they and their heirs of me and my heirs, rendering to me and my heirs the service of half a knight's fee. These being witnesses, Ric, son of Roger, Will. de Bray, Rob. de Meinewarin, Tomas de Nortbury, Walter de Stocheport, Mat. de Bromhale, Will., his brother, Simon de Stocheport, John de Bredburi, Jordan de Bredburi, Rob. son of Bernard, Rob. son of Rahenald, Mat. clerk de Stocheport, Ric. his son, Gilebert de Louthian, Walter de Paries, Hug. his brother, Roger de Estun, John, his brother, Henry, clerk de Tideswelle, and many others."

William's brother-in-law confirmed the grant:

Know all, as well those present as those to come, that I, Robertus de Stokeport, have granted and conceded, and by this my present charter have confirmed, to Willielmus de Vernon, and Margeria, his wife, for his homage and service, as the right and inheritance of the aforesaid Margeria, my sister, all the land of "Marpel et Wibereslee," with all the appurtenances, in wood and plain, in waters and pastures, and in all other places and liberties, — viz., within these boundaries, as I ascend from Hiderlektop in Mersee to Guit, and from Guit to Wibberlektop, and from Wibberlektop to the highway, and as I descend from the highway to Kartelacke, and from Kartelacke to Huiderlektop, and from Huiderlektop to Mersee. To have and to hold to him and his heirs of me and my heirs, free and quit of all services and exactions, by finding one forester in the forest of my lord, the Earl of Chester, — viz., Maklesfeld; saving for my lord, the Earl of Chester, the right of hunting with hawks, falcons, and sparrow-hawks. Hiis testibus, Philippo de Orrebi tunc Justiciario Cestrie, Hugone Disp(ensar)y, Rogero de Meinewaring, Willielmo de Venables, Ricardo Phitum, Jord. de Bredburi, Benedicto de Wurth, Rogero de Dunes, et multis aliis.^[3]

"To all about to see or hear this writing, etc, Know you that I have given, etc, for my soul and the souls of Margaret my wife and my successors, to God, and St Mary, and St Editha of Polesworth (near Tamworth), 5s of my rent of Harlaston, to be paid annually at the feast of St John the Baptist, for the maintenance of a lamp with oil, to burn every night in the Chapter of the said House."^[1]

"One of these [charters in Belvoir muniments which relate to Lenton Priory], dated 1237, recites that William de Vernon, for the repose of his soul, and the souls of his wife Alice, and all his ancestors and successors, had given all the land which he had in Stanton (near Haddon), to the Prior and Convent of Lenton, together with his body, there to be buried beside his father."^[1]

William must have died around 1242, when in a deed dated in that year, the abbot of Dieulacresse, and the Priors of Lenton, Chester, and Derby were the executors of the will of William Vernon, Knt, and his debs were to be proved at Derby.^[1]

William de Vernon was succeeded by his son and heir, Richard de Vernon. Richard, who was alive in 4 Edward I, died without having surviving children, and was succeeded by his brother, Robert de Vernon.^[1]

Sir William Vernon, a High Sheriff of Lancashire and Chief Justice of Cheshire 1229–1236, married Margaret, the heiress of Sir Robert de Stockport. ^[4]
