Major General Norman Alfred Vickery CBE MC was born on 28th July 1917 in Lakemba, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of Lillian Vickery and unknown father. [1]
Norman was a senior Australian Army officer, being promoted to Major General in 1969. [2] He served in the Second Australian Imperial Force, during the Second World War, from 25th October 1939 to 12th October 1945. [3] He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) on 9th May 1941 whilst a Captain with the 2/1st Field Regiment in the Middle East for 'conspicuous success and courage at Bardia'. [4][5][6] He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) on 19th July 1945 in recognition of his 'energy and zeal at Wakde, Sarmi, Sawar, Lae and Biak' with the 1st Naval Bombardment Group. [7][8][9] He was Mentioned in Despatches (equivalent to today's Commendation for Gallantry) on 6th March 1947 for his 'exceptional service in the field in the South West Pacific Area' with the 1st Naval Bombardment Group. [10][11]
Norman married Helen Mae Cumming in 1946 in Victoria. [12]
Whilst Norman was posted to Headquarters, 3rd Division, Citizens Military Force, he was attached to Headquarters, Australia Force Vietnam in January 1967. [13] His MBE was upgraded to Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year's Honours 1969 for his service in the Citizens Military Force. [14][15]
A Judge of the Victorian County Court, Norman is noted for his Motor and Traffic Law: Wiseman and Vickery's Motor and Traffic Law Comprising the Statutes, Regulations and Cases Relating to Motor Cars, Road Traffic and Road Transport and Civil Actions Arising Therefrom. [16]
Aged about 81 years, he passed away in 1998.
