In source [5] above regarding Candas van Pattana regarding her parentage: the attached source reads

"After 29 October 1697 Candas van Pattana and Jacobus Victor were in a de facto relationship. In the resolution granting the emancipation request of their son, it is clearly stated that Jacobus was his father." - not Gerrit as indicated above. Gerrit bought her, but it seems his son had the relationship.

I'm trying to get my head around this (without spending too much time on it). First things first - forensically restructuring the bio in a collative fashion as I did with Jacobus Victor (abt. 1669 - 1711) {Victor-243} …

It looks as if half the reply went missing, or I don't know how to see it.

As for my comment - it seems the source you attached was changed since you attached it, as it probably said Gerrit was the father and then they changed it in the meantime. I had Jacobus as Christiaan's father, so thought I'd check your source, only to find it agreed with me instead of what was listed here. I am sure I saw the actual document stating parentage, but as I was focusing on Gerrit I didn't make a note of it.

One relationship that I do have the records of is that between Gerrit and his slave Hester, with whom he had 4 children. It seems that Christina died at the same time (approximately) as his first child was being born to Hester, and I have links to the Baptism as evidence: Hester: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DZN4-WFN?i=45&cc=1478678 Caatje, Anna Magdalena, and Jannes: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DZN4-WKD?i=50&cc=1478678 (I hope the links work.) I know how difficult it is to get ones head around an old part of a tree when you're exploring another section, but I also don't have the confidence yet to change it myself, especially without corroboration.

Hi Catherine, no - half the reply did not go missing. I haven't yet come back to this issue (I'm co-project coordinator of this vast project; I have to limit my attentions and spread my time). Changing this will not be possible without collaboration since the profiles and the relationships have been project profile protected. As goes we Always take the baptism images along with the trascriptions to validate the parent relationhips. Other documents such as emancipation requests, come secondary. That having been said, Delia (the "source") herself states that the work is of collatory nature; nothing is set in stone. If you have the other profiles of his two children ready, I could connect this person to their profiles. As far as the parents go, could you give a more clear reasoning why and how the baptism should be read?

The baptism reads Christiaan, son of Candas, (who was) the slave of Gerrit. On the certificates for all 4 of his other children by a single person (slave) he is specifically named as father.

I went back to double check the baptism certificate on Christiaan's own profile page and noticed in the comments that this question has come up repeatedly over several years. Coming back to the reason for my original comment here: under the heading Marriage there is a comment relating to his relationship to Candas. Follow the source linked to that, and it says something completely different.

Hi Gordon,

The baptism from 13 June 1613 you found for Jan Victors seems to say, Louwijs Pijters (opa ?) Stoolman or Stoelman ? (hard to figure out-read if it says opa or if maybe it's all one word or last name perhaps, so Spa.stoelman or stoolman (?)) & Stijntjen Jaspers, Fiktor Fiktorsz, sijn huijsfrou en oma ? So it could indeed mean the grandparents for some reason baptized the child named Jans (?) (or Hans ?)

What also puzzles me a bit about the info, is that Jan Victors seems to be a son of man named Victor, so the Victors is not a regular last name but a patronymic, his son Gerrit is born and baptized on 15 January 1643 as son of Jan Victors (it's transcribed as Victers), so normally his patronymic would be Jans or Jansz or something, unless he adopted Victor for Last name after his emigration to South Africa of course... scan right page, 15 January last entry

A bit busy now but will look for more later, it's a great find so my compliments ;)

Greets and hope it helps a bit, Bea

[S883] Franesco Uys Rootenberg, "Dutch Masters in the Pretorius bloodline", In the Stadsarchief Amsterdam we accordingly find the baptism of Gerrit VICTORS recorded on 15th January 1643 in Amsterdam as the son of “Jan VICTERS” (sic) and “Jannetjen [Gerrits] BELLERTS”, with his paternal grandfather, Lowijs VICTORS, his maternal grandmother, Elsjen HENDRIX, his uncle, Antoni BELLERTS and Marytjen JACOBS as godparents [footnote 71: “Biografische Aantekeningen”, in Oud-Holland, 1886, pp 220]. and on this image the last entry for 15 Jan 1643 - I can read Jan at the beginning and kind -Gerrit at the end. can you confirm this is correct please.
