Biography

John Vidler [the younger] was baptised on 11 November 1743 in Battle, Sussex, England, the son of John VIdler and Elizabeth Bowling, and the brother of John Vidler [the elder], William Vidler [the elder], Elizabeth (Vidler) Longley, Thomas Vidler [the elder], Richard Vidler, Edward Vidler, Sarah Vidler, Mary Vidler, William Vidler [the younger], Thomas Vidler [the younger] and Grace Vidler.[1][2].

The first child of John and Elizabeth had also been named John after his father but had died within days of his birth so, as was the custom at the time, the next male child carried the name.

He had eleven known siblings, but three did not survive childhood. His oldest brother, John [Elder] died as an infant, Elizabeth married John Longley, Thomas (the Elder) died when only 5 years old and William [Elder] died aged 10 years. Richard who married Mary Winton and become the father of William who was the patriarch of the Australian Vidlers, It isn't clear what became of Edward but he was very comfortably provided for, as was his brother John. What became of Sarah and Mary is not known as yet. William [Younger] married Charity Sweetenham and become a renowned Baptist, non Cornormist Preacher. Thomas [Younger] is thought to have been christened in 1760 and his sister Grace was born in about 1762.
As there aren't many sources available for this family, many exact dates are not known but the information in the Will of (his father) John Vidler of Battle, is conclusive, naming nine living children at the time of writing on 10 May 1775 and which was probated on 12 December 1780, Elizabeth, John, Edward, Richard, Sarah, Mary, William, Thomas and Grace Vidler [2].

John married Ann Bizendine on 13 November 1776 in Battle, Sussex, England and they were the parents of John Vidler and Richard Vidler [3].

John died in about 1820 in Battle, Sussex, England [4].

Research Notes

There was a John Vidler who died aged 97 and buried 11 November 1829 in Battle St. Mary. Perhaps this is John and his age had been exaggerated by 10 years? [5]
