James Vidler was born in 1818 in Hastings, Sussex, England to Richard Vidler and Susanna/Susan.
James Vidler, son of Richard, a blacksmith, & Susanna, was christened on 4 Nov 1818 at All Saints in Hastings.[1]
In 1841 James Vidler (age 20-24, J Copper Smith) lived at Isabella Cottages in St Clement, Hastings with his father Richard (50-54, J Blacksmith), mother Susan (50-54), and sister Frances (20-24).[2]
James Vidler married Elizabeth Manington in 1843. The marriage was registered in Hastings in the first quarter of the year.[3]
James and Elizabeth had eight children:
John Fennings Vidler (1843-1897) [emigrated to the USA]
Hetty Manington (Vidler) Humphreys (1862-1940) [emigrated to the USA]
In 1851 James Vidler (age 32, Tinman) lived at School House in St Clement, Hastings with his wife Elizabeth (32) and four children: John (7, Scholar), Mary (5, Scholar), James (3), and Richard (4 months).[4]
In 1861 James Vidler (age 40, Gas Fitter) lived at Gas Factory Cottages No 1 in Hastings with his wife Elizabeth (40) and six children: Mary S (15, Milliner), James R (13, Scholar), Richard G (10, Scholar), Thomas M (6, Scholar), George M (4, Scholar), and Elizabeth M (2).[5]
In 1871 James Vidler (age 52, Tinsmith) lived at Hope Cottages in All Saints, Hastings with his wife Elizabeth (52) and five children: James (22, Fishmonger), Thomas (18, Labourer), George (14, Scholar), Elizabeth (12, Scholar), and Hetty (9, Scholar).[6]
In 1881 James Vidler (age 66 [~63], Tin Smith) was a lodger at 10 John St in St Clement, Hastings in the household of Thomas & Emma Tapp.[7] James' family lived at 137 All Saints Street in Hastings: wife Elizabeth (62, Laundress) and two daughters: Elizabeth (21, Laundress) and Hetty (19, Dressmaker).
James Vidler passed away in 1884, aged 66 years. His death was registered in Hastings in the first quarter of the year.[8]
Note: Previously thought to be the James Vidler (25 Nov 1818 - 21 Oct 1885) who is buried at Brookfield Rural Cemetery in Brookfield, Madison County, New York.[9] However, the family members of that individual do not match with this James Vidler. A number of James' children did emigrate to the US and settle in New York, but James remained in England.
