Biography

Albert was the youngest child of Gus and Gertie Huseby Vieg.[1] He grew up and attended school in Appleton Minnesota.[2] A later census[3] indicates he completed school through the eighth grade. The death of his mother when he was 14 may have been a factor in his leaving school. In 1910, he was working as a waiter in a restaurant, and unlike his father and older brother who were unemployed at the time of census, he had worked full time the previous year.[4]

When he was 21 years old, Albert was working as a bookkeeper at the Standard Lumber Company in Benson, Minnesota.[5]

World War I

Albert and his brother Charley both entered the Army in December 1917. Albert enlisted at Fort Dodge, Iowa, and after being rejected for the field artillery because of flat feet, he entered the Quartermaster's department and was sent to Fort Logan, Colorado. After two months he obtained a transfer to a machine gun battalion at Camp Freemont, California in April 1918.[6] He was assigned to Headquarters of the 8th Division for a few weeks before being assigned to Company A of the 22nd Machine Gun Battallion. He was promoted to Corporal in June 1918[7] and to Sergeant in October of that year.[8] His unit embarked from Hoboken, New Jersey, on the Aquinitania on November 2, 1918, and arrived at Brest, France, two days before the armistice. His unit spent about two weeks in Gondrecourt, and returned to the US by January 5, 1919. He was discharged on February 12.[9][10]

Marriage and Career

Albert married Dorothy Gray, also a native of Appleton, in Lucas, Ohio, when he was 30 years old.[11] He was working as a mechanic in Pontiac, Michigan, at the time. His older brother Charles joined Albert and Dorothy in Pontiac in 1930.[12]

In 1940, he was working as an inspector in auto manufacturing,[13] presumably at the Pontiac Motor Company plant in Pontiac, where he was working two years later.[14]

Albert died in Pontiac when he was 68 years old.[15].
