Willempje (alternative spellings include Willemtje, Willemje, and Willempie) Viele was born about 1664 in Albany, New Netherland.
She married Simon Schermerhorn in about 1683. [1]
On February 9, 1690, Willemtje Viele Schermerhorn and her family were victims of a French and Indian attack at Schenectady, New York, known as the "Schenectady massacre." Her son Johannes was killed in the attack. According to family tradition, after being shot through the thigh, Simon Schermerhorn escaped on a wounded horse and rode through the night to Albany, warning inhabitants along the way. He arrived in Albany at 5 a.m., "more dead than alive", becoming the fist person to bring news of the attack. Willemtje Schermerhorn, son Arnout, Simon's brother Cornelius and his sister Jannetie (the brother and sister probably lived with him) also escaped. Circumstances of their escape are not recorded, but tradition states that 4-year-old Arnout was wrapped up in a blanket by his father and cast in a snowdrift for safety. [1]
Soon after the attack on Schenectady, the surviving members of the family moved to New York City, where records indicate that two daughters were born. Simon Schermerhorn became master of a vessel navigating the Hudson River. The descendants of Simon and Willemtje Viele Schermerhorn were engaged in the shipping business for many generations.[1]
After her husband's death in 1696, Willemtje married Levinus Winne (June 20, 1699). [1] They had seven children.[2] After the death of Levinus Winne, she married Johannes Van Hoesen (June 19, 1709).[1]
