Joseph was born on Oct 28, 1840 in possibly Mendon, but certainly in St Joseph County, Michigan, to Margaret Vreeland and Benjamin Viles.

In June 1863, Joseph Viles, a single farmer b. Michigan, registered for the Civil War Draft in the Eight Congressional District, Hudson Township, McLean County, Illinois.^[1]

On 29 Oct 1863, Joseph D. Viles married Elizabeth E. Turnipseed in McLean County, Illinois.^[2]

In 1870, Joseph Viles, a 29 year old farmer, lived in Hudson Township, McLean, Illinois, with his wife Lizzie and son Issac.^[3]

In 1880, Joseph Viles, a farmer, lived in Granville, Jasper, Illinois, with his wife Eliza and son Isaac.^[4]
