Biography

James Viles, was born on 1 Oct 1870,[1][2] in Hancock County, Tennessee,[1] the son of Levi Viles, b. Anderson County, TN, and Lucinda Trent, b. Hancock County, TN.[1]

In 1880, Levi and Lucinda Viles lived with three children, including 10 year old James, in Civil District 10, Hancock, Tennessee. Levi was a farmer and Samuel worked as a farm hand.[3]

Surena Seals and James Viles were married about 1888.[4][5] Based on census and other records, they had at least 7 children:

  • Milem Viles, b. 1 Sep 1889 (1890?); d. 31 July 1954[6]
  • Belle Dora Viles, b. Oct 1892; d. 14 Jun 1914[7]
  • George Viles, b. 6 Jun 1896; d. 3 Dec 1934[8]
  • Alvin Viles, b. 29 Aug 1897; m. Venia Trent; d. 11 Jun 1979[9]
  • Nola Etta Viles, b. 22 July 1902; m. John Lafayette Oliver; m. Don K. Simmons; d. 24 Aug 1982[10]
  • Campbell Viles, b. 28 Jan 1907; m. Alpha (Haun) Moore 4 Jan 1956[11]; d. 12 May 1971[12]
  • child, b. and died before 1900

In 1900, James and "Shrener" Viles lived in Civil District 10, Hancock, Tennessee, with 4 children. James was a farmer.[4]

In 1910, James, wife Surena and 6 children lived in Civil District 10, Hancock, Tennessee. James was a farmer.[5]

In 1920, James V. Viles lived on a place he rented in Civil District 2, Grainger, Tennessee, where he farmed. Living with him were his wife Sirener and 5 children.[13]

James Viles died on 7 Feb 1929 at Mooresburg, Hawkins, Tennessee. He was married at the time of his death.[1] He is buried at the Economy United Methodist Church Cemetery, Hamblen, Tennessee.[2]
