Biography
Joseph was born on 5 Sept 1792 at Orland, Hancock, Maine, the son of Joseph Viles and his wife Sally,[1] or on 12 Sept 1792.[2]
During the War of 1812, Joseph Viles served as a Sergeant in Capt. E. Butler's Company, Col. E. Sweet's Regiment of Massachusetts Militia. The company was raised at New Vineyard, Maine, and served from 18 Sept 1814 to 8 Nov 1814 at Bath.[3]
On 3 July 1816, Eleanor Heald and Joseph Viles, both of Anson, were married at Norridgewock, Somerset, Maine.[4] From US Census and other records, they had at least the following children:
In 1850, Joseph Viles (indexed as "Tiles") lived in Geneva, Walworth, Wisconsin, with his wife Eleanor and four children.[7]
In 1860, Joseph Viles, a 66 years old farmer, lived in Elkhorn, Walworth, Wisconsin, with his wife Ellinor and four others.[8]
In 1870, Joseph Viles, a 77 retired farmer b. Maine, lived in Elkhorn, Walworth, Wisconsin, with the family of Washington and Melvina Hay.[9]
He died on 31 Aug 1874 in Walworth County, Wisconsin,[10] and is buried at the North Geneva Cemetery, Como, Walworth, Wisconsin.[11] There is a plaque at his grave indicating that he served in the War of 1812.
