Biography

Lady Constance Villiers, born about 1840,[1] was the daughter of George William Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon and Lady Katherine Grimston. She married Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby in 1864 in London, England.[2] They had ten children, eight sons and two daughters.

While her husband was serving as Governor-General of Canada from 1888 to 1893, Lady Stanley founded the Lady Stanley Institute for Trained Nurses on Rideau Street in Ottawa.[3] On her return to London, England, she came up with the idea and funded what became known as "Derby Bundles," flannel bags containing baby clothing given to poor mothers in East End London. She died in 1922.[4]
