Biography

This profile is part of the Vinal Name Study.

Ann(a) Vinal, a widow, appears in the records of Scituate, Plymouth Colony (later Massachusetts), in 1636, with three children, Martha, Stephen, and John. Martha was the oldest of the three. Her brother Stephen, who said he was born in December 1630, reported that the family immigrated to New England in 1636 and settled in Scituate that same year.[1] Savage gives her first name as Mary.[2]

Birth

"Early Scituate Families", on the Scituate Historical Society website, states that Martha Vinal was born in Biddenden, Kent, England, where she was baptized on 10 August 1627. [3] Parish records from Kent record that Martha Vynall, daugher of Stephen Vynall, was baptized 10 Aug 1628 in the Parish Church of Benenden, Kent, England. [4]

Marriage

The Vital Records of Scituate, Massachusetts, list the marriage of Martha Vinall to Isack Chittenden in April 1646.[5][6][7]

Death

Her husband died before 26 October 1676, when Martha Chittenden "gave truth to" the inventory of his estate. Martha Chettenden and her son Israell Chettenden were granted letters of administration for the estate of Isacke Chettenden on 1 November 1676.[8] She died some time after that date.

Text: Stephen Vinal, possibly from Kent, England, appears to have been in Scituate around 1636/7 when, according to the Lothropp notes, “Goodman” Vinal acquired the house built by Henry Cobb. Stephen was proposed as a freeman, 1638/39 and possibly died around that time as no one by this name is shown on the 1643 ATBA list of men from Scituate between the ages of sixteen and sixty. Anna (nee Vridge?) Vinal was possibly his wife. Records of St. George’s Church. Benenden, Kent, include the baptisms of Martha, daughter of Stephen Vyneall, 10 Aug 1627, and Steven, son of Steven Vynall 28 Nov 1630. and John Vinall, son of Stephen baptized in the neighbouring parish of Biddenden 30 Mar 1634.

Vinel-2 and Vinal-31 appear to represent the same person because: Same person -- see details in biographies. LNAB needs to be corrected to Vynall.

Who ever the wife of Michael Chatterton was, she wasn't Martha, daughter of Ann(a) Vinal of Scituate, Massachusetts. That Martha apparently was born in the latter part of the 1620s and is rather well documented to have married Isaac Chittenden in Scituate.
